Special Olympics College at USM Wins Hub City Shootout

SO College Southern Miss competed in the 2nd Annual Hub City Shootout against Hub City Special Olympics on Saturday, February 21st at the Hattiesburg YMCA, earning a thrilling 14–12 victory in a hard-fought game.

Both teams brought tremendous energy to the court, showcasing teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the matchup. The close score reflected the intensity of the competition, with players giving their all from start to finish.

Events like the Hub City Shootout highlight the power of inclusive sports to bring people together while creating opportunities for athletes of all abilities to compete, connect, and celebrate their achievements.

IDS extends sincere thanks to Cathrine Harlow, Special Olympics Mississippi Area 1 Director, for her collaboration and leadership in helping grow this exciting tradition. Appreciation is also extended to the YMCA staff for their work in preparing the facility and ensuring the event ran smoothly.

The enthusiastic support from parents, families, and friends who came out to cheer on the athletes added to the excitement of the day and helped make the event a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Prior to officially joining IDS staff in January 2025, Amy volunteered for over a decade with various IDS programs. In her current role, Amy serves as Executive Coordinator for Philanthropy and Development organizing fundraisers and events, contributing to the development of new programs and services, and touting all things IDS throughout the community. During her free time, Amy can be found gardening, cooking, list-making, and enjoying life with her family.
