New Year, New Experiences: STEP OUT Hosts Open House and Visits INFINITY Science Center

STEP OUT rang in the New Year strong with weekly activities ranging from an Open House to a fieldtrip to INFINITY Science Center. These early-year experiences set a positive, engaging tone for what’s ahead.

The Open House offered a relaxed and welcoming space for participants, families, and staff to connect at the start of the year. To help everyone get to know one another and set intentions for the months ahead, the group played “Two Resolutions and a Lie,” sparking conversation, laughter, and shared goals for the New Year. Participants crafted DIY confetti poppers from spent toilet paper rolls and scrapbook paper.  Guests also enjoyed refreshments, including cupcakes, buffalo chicken dip, spinach dip, and fruit punch, making the gathering both meaningful and fun.

Building on that sense of connection, STEP OUT participants then took their curiosity on the road with a field trip to the INFINITY Science Center in Perkinston, Mississippi. After enjoying lunch together at the on-site café, the group explored a variety of interactive exhibits. Participants experienced underwater simulations, tested weather phenomena, and discovered the history of space shuttles and Apollo missions—bringing science to life through hands-on exploration.

STEP OUT meets weekly on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi in McLemore Hall and is open to adults ages 25 years and older with developmental or other disabilities.
