From Build Zone to Workplace: SEA Students Prepare for Success

The 2026 Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) kicked off during the first week of June, welcoming students through in-person programs in Hattiesburg and Long Beach, as well as a virtual learning option.

This year’s LEGO-themed academy challenged students to become “Master Builders” of their future careers by spending a week developing the workplace and life skills needed for success. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and interactive lessons, participants explored professionalism, teamwork, communication, self-advocacy, stress management, interviewing skills, resume development, and workplace expectations.

Throughout the week, students participated in person-centered planning activities designed to help them identify their strengths, interests, and goals while creating a personalized blueprint for their future. They learned the importance of professional behavior, practiced working as part of a team, explored workplace accommodations and self-advocacy strategies, and developed tools for managing stress and navigating challenges.

As the week progressed, students strengthened their job readiness skills through lessons on workplace communication, interview preparation, resume building, and time management. The academy culminated with mock interviews and internship preparation activities that allowed participants to practice their skills and build confidence before entering the workforce.

While the kickoff week marked an exciting beginning, it is only the first step in the SEA experience. Students will spend the remainder of the summer participating in paid internships with community businesses and organizations throughout Mississippi. During their internships, participants will receive ongoing support and individualized job coaching from IDS staff to help them build skills, gain valuable work experience, and achieve their employment goals.

The Summer Enrichment Academy is made possible through a partnership between the Institute for Disability Studies and the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS). Together, IDS and MDRS are helping students gain real-world experience, develop confidence, and prepare for successful futures in the workforce.

We are proud of everything our students accomplished during kickoff week and look forward to watching them continue to grow, learn, and thrive throughout the summer.

Prior to officially joining IDS staff in January 2025, Amy volunteered for over a decade with various IDS programs. In her current role, Amy serves as Executive Coordinator for Philanthropy and Development organizing fundraisers and events, contributing to the development of new programs and services, and touting all things IDS throughout the community. During her free time, Amy can be found gardening, cooking, list-making, and enjoying life with her family.
